I'm not an expert, but I'd say very important. the MAS gives your ECU very specific info that determines your air/fuel ratio info. wouldn't recommend trying to fab a short ram or CAI unless you know a little something about aerodynamics and metal fabrication. your best bet it you're trying to save spending 220 bucks on a CAI is to stop by auto zone and pick up a spectre cone for 25-50 bucks. if you want to fab something, fab the bracket to hold up the intake. heres mine with the 25 dollar cone.
if you want to improve your intakes abilities, you may want to mod your corner grilles
with aluminum mesh, pictured here. i did both sides for symmetry.
