Default Short Shifter Question

Could a short shifter mess up anything even if it broke? Also, can any one vouch for the nst short shifter.

go read up on the NST short shifter thread, plenty of good feed back from it. and yes..you can "mess up" a lot if your short shifter breaks...imagine how your engine will run if the shift link disengages...because that's exactly what happens lol. but there should be nothing to worry about...install is easy, and the quality of the product is good.

IMHO, the NST is a budget part. The TRD has more parts and is engineered to avoid wearing the link cables. The NST shifter is just the linkage modification and causes the cables to bind a little bit. I have driven bothe the NST on a friend's car and have the TRD installed on mine. The TRD is a more complicated install, but the end result is really noticeable. My xD shifts smoother than his and just "feels" better.

I'm not trying to dispute what you're saying, but honestly the parts are the same...if you look at the TRD and compare it to the NST, they're almost identical in shape, and require the same installation process...read the installation guide from sparks toyota, then the installation guide someone wrote here on the forums for the NST, it wouldn't make sense for them to be any different.

The TRD comes with a new cable guide it is machined aluminum compared to the factory cast iron part. The TRD cable guide straightens out the cables. True the TRD and the NST shift lever cam are the same, but I believe the NST does not come with the cable guide.

'tis true. I don't have any experience with the NST, but the TRD one does come with the new guide. I made sure of that when I picked my car up from the dealership. The shifting is AWESOME compared with the stock setup. HUGE difference!

that's basically what led me to believe there was no difference (that and i had never seen the cable guide listed in the set for the TRD shifter) but...i guess that's what you pay more for. interesting indeed! i plan on purchasing a quick shifter as well...guess ill be getting TRD if it comes with the new guide

It's a bunch cheaper and you get less. Try a TRD SSK and you will agree that it crisper and the shift map is more intuitive. Neutral feels the way it should - loose.

What does the cable guide look like? Can it be easily hand made? Like getting some parts from Home Depot and modifying them.

Anything is possible, but this part is milled from a piece of aluminum with irregular precision cutouts for the cable stops / irregularly spaced bolt holes.. If you could do this at home, I would shake your hand, but I would consider you a little odd. It would take much more effort than the delta between the NST / TRD prices.

It's possible that the part shows up in some Toyota / Scion parts list?

I hope the following pictures help:

These are part of the instructions:

This is the factory (stock) guide:

This is the top view of the factory guide - notice how it angles the cables:

This is how the TRD cable guide looks in place - notice the cables are parallel:

Thanks for the pics.

So the only difference is that it just straightens out the angle of the cables?
