Default Which fuse to use

Ok, so I've got a Scion xD and I'm planning out some leds I'm going to install. I've got 4 led tubes and 4 Prewired Superflux 4 Chip LEDs totaling 76 leds total.

I'm waiting for them to get here so I've been working out the wiring, but have come across a dilemma.

I don't want to exceed a 10 amp fuse out of fear of melting wires, but can't find a good fuse to use that isn't already used by many other (important) things. Though I did find a 15 amp fuse that isn't being used but is there anyway. Can I just use that fuse spot (47 I believe) and replace it with a 10 amp fuse?

P.S. Brand new forum member and Scion owner....Hello!

how about hooking the 4 tube kit in with one 10 amp fuse, and the other LED's on another 10 amp fuse? i have my LED's tied into my hazard lights. guess what, i run them for my firecalls (along with the roof light) and have yet to blow the fuse. LED's draw almost no power. especially a small set like a 4 tube kit. i bet they barely draw an amp. my firefighter light on my roof has 386 blue LED's. i used to be able to have a three way splitter on my cigarette lighter and charge my ipod on it, my cell phone, and run that light on it, without popping any fuses.

trust me, LED's draw minimal power. you have nothing to worry about.

lol, ok that's what I figured but wanted to make sure. So if I put the 4 superflux leds on a 10 amp fuse I don't have to worry about said amperage burning 24 gauge wire?

Why use 24 gauge wire? its just small and annoying to work with.

24gauge wire cant handle more then a 3.5amp draw.... thats prolly enough to handle what you want to do. but just plan a head spend $10 and go get 18awg wire and just tape it into you cig lighter and call it a day.

The wires I am installing myself are all going to be 18awg but the superflux are pre wired and waterproofed straight from oznium.com so there's not to much I can do with those. Plus, since these are going to be in their own fuse and not with the led bars it won't be a problem to put in a 3.5 amp fuse.

where are you going to put in a 3.5 amp fuse? just hook onto one already there. that's what i did for my police scanner (i forget what fuse that's on.... i think windshield wipers), my LED bars (described above), and the "little blue wire" for my sub woofer (not the main 10 gauge wire, the whatever secondary power) is hooked to an existing 10 amp fuse.

i have yet to blow one out.

also, welcome to the boards!!!

I finished installing the cupholder/cubbyhole lights today and used the fuse set aside for fog lights. There was a 15 amp fuse in there, but since I haven't any fog lights I just used two 4 amp fuses (couldn't find 3.5 amp at the auto store).

Works great! I've got some pics that I'll have to upload eventually.

If you are using an in-line fuse, just tap power from here:

That's not used by anything... just an "extra" non-fused power location. It is located behind the flip-out cubby on the driver's side.

you put a 4 amp fuse into a 15 amp slot? you stupid? that doesn't sound like it's going to end well.....

just because the slot has a 15 amp fuse in it doesn't mean it's outputting 15 amps. that's just the load limit to protect whatever is wired to it there from blowing out by blowing the fuse first in case of a surge. i don't know if you can drop the amp rating of a slot and get away with it without blowing it. good luck

Umm...it's already installed and complete. No blown fuses...and I've already talked to my mechanic about switching that 15 amp fuse for the 4 amp one and he said It would be fine. And, it is.

Alright buddy.

not everyone here is an electrical engineer. some people simply make recommendations off of what they have tested and tried themselves. In this case, this is what JJ did. Was JJ's comment of "you stupid?" necessary? probably not. Was it harmless? I hope everything you read on the internet is harmless to you. All forums are is free advice, professionals / gear head's alike putting a few cents into the jar.

and this post is even contributing to this thread how?

yes i admit now that remark was out of line, but at the time i thought it to be true. i've had too many a fuse go out on me for using lower rated in a socket that had a higher rated fuse on it before i changed/replaced it. and not just on the xD.

so until you can actually contribute, keep trolling away.

O.K. I appologize, I just lost my cool (under the circumstances) seeing JJ call someone "Stupid"... I didn't appreciate that, and I guess we both were wrong, and 2 wrongs son't make a right.

Sorry to have jumped on you JJ. I'm cool now and hope you weren't too offended.

Aloha....

Who knew that asking about fuses would ignite this amount of drama lol. In case anyone was wondering (topic seems to have shifted focus), I have gotten the set of led lights for under the dash and installed them last night!
