2008-2009 xD recall - brake system moisture
Thought the owners of the xD would like to know about a recall for the 2008-2009 xD, moisture can enter the brake system. Sounds like it's through the brake booster. Here is the link and excerpt.

Toyota Recalling Corollas, Scions
Southfield (WWJ) -- Toyota owners in Michigan and 18 other states will receive recall notices next month pertaining to a recall of about 95,700 Toyota and Scion-brand vehicles.
The recall, due to a possible brake malfunction, affects some 2009 and 2010 Toyota Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles and some 2008 and 2009 Scion xD vehicles, Toyota said.
For those vehicles equipped with 1.8-liter engines, condensed moisture may seep into the brake system and freeze in low temperatures, potentially causing ice accumulation and weakening the power-assist to the brakes.
Those affected by the recall will be asked to return the vehicle to a dealer, where a new intake air connector will be installed. Customers will not be charged for the hour-long procedure, Toyota said.
Toyota said vehicle owners from 19 states will receive recall notices in early September. They are: Michigan, Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Customers with questions or concerns should contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331 or the Scion Customer Experience at 1-866-70SCION (707-2466). "

ALL of them that have the problem should be recalled, not just the ones in cold states. Water in the brake system is a no-no and needs to be removed. C'mon Toyota/Scion step up to the plate and fix your mistake!

oh! NEAT!
hey, what do you think the xD owners are going to get for their trouble? JADA toys limited edition model xD's? or a scion tote bag and such? maybe a scion laptop bag? oh man, somebody is going to have to start a thread about this! there hasn't been a recall for scions in a while!

I would suggest you stop waiting till the last minute to brake.

2nd'd. There's nothing that says your brake problems have anything to do with this.

Yep... I'm in a neighboring state not on the list, we get pummeled with lake effect snow and highs in January struggle to get above 10 deg F.... lows in the singles and neg's.... Wonder why not all 'snow belt', "cold" states are on the list?....

I wish they had made this a recall for all states. Being in western WA the winters aren't too bad, but eastern WA gets just as cold as Idaho, same with OR. Guess its time to make a call to one of the numbers listed and start expressing concerns, really, set, start dialing, lol.

I wonder if the VSC equipped cars will be excluded from the recall since they do not have a vaccum operated brake booster. I assume the air intake they are referring to has something to do with the brake booster.
I guess they assume that the owners in the states not included won't drive to a cold climate. Doesn't make much sense imo.

Here's a bit more info from Autoblog:

And just as posted above, this may be helpful for some of you:
I'd say if you are one of those people NOT included in this by the state you're in - but are concerned, I'd call up and ask what you can do to have yours checked out. Can't hurt.

Toyota says the problem may arise when condensed moisture from the positive crankcase ventilation port seeps into the brake system vacuum port and freezes. As ice accumulates, the brake vacuum port could plug up and "power assist to the brakes would gradually decrease and lead to lengthened vehicle stopping distances."
Sounds like if you have VSC (electric brake assist instead of a booster) it's not an issue. Yeah!

I started to panic since I'm in northeastern Pennsylvania where it gets pretty darn cold on top of the Appalachian mountain range where I live, but I have VSC so it sounds as if I dont need to worry. Whew.
