Hi all,

I have a new xD that has about 3200 miles. My husband has always been a stickler for doing oil changes every 3000 miles. I get 2 complimentary oil changes with my new car, one at 5000 mi and then one at 10000 mi. Do you all think it's wise to wait?
Anyone else stick to every 3000? Anyone changed the oil themselves? Is it hard to do? It's just different since you change out the filter inside the canister (at least that's what he's told me).

Personally, I think you should change the oil after the first 500 miles or so. Most of the metal shavings, etc. will have been run through the filter by then and the contaminates from the new motor build will be in the oil. I just got an xD and I will be changing at 500, 3000, then 5-6000 mile intervals running a good quality full synthetic.

 

I changed mine at 2500, or 3 I don't remember, and don't feel like running out to the car to check records.

 

I won't change mine until 5000 miles. That whole "metal shavings" theory doesn't really apply anymore. That was the case on older cars, but it isn't really relevant anymore.

It certainly does still apply. When you change yours, tear the ends off the cartridge and look at all the metal, paint, etc. that's in between the ribs of the filter.

Back in May '08, I took my xD to change the oil at 750 miles because three of my friends warned me about metal shavings. When I got to the place, the guy said this is too new a car and said they have to order the oil filter which will come in 3 days. I got on my xD, drove to Toyota, bought the filter for 7 bucks and changed it that day.

I'm planning to get another oil change at 3750 before going to Scion at 5000 miles. It is sad because car companies are cutting corners and labor more and more today. However, if you think Scion's complimentary oil change is unusual, you should take a look at the Mercedes E class sedan instruction manuals. They give their FIRST complimentary oil change to their drivers at 10,000 miles.

 

I changed mine at 1250 miles.

Nobody is telling you to change how you do/plan to do things. The information presented in the link just proves that your statement ("That whole "metal shavings" theory doesn't really apply anymore. That was the case on older cars, but it isn't really relevant anymore.") is incorrect.

 

That's fine by me, dude. As for me, I love Click and Clack, and they also recommend every 5,000 miles, even on new vehicles.

Honestly, I highly doubt that waiting till 5000 miles will have much if any impact on the motor. I will just sleep better at night knowing that all of the metal shavings and any contaminates are gone. I want to switch to Mobil1 anyway.

If you hear any Clicky Clacky, drain the oil and run it wide open till it dies (as long as you are under warranty) ;)

 

I always tell people to use your head. If you drive your car hard, obviously change the oil sooner. If you baby it, you can afford to wait. Chances are it won't hurt to wait until 5k but if it makes you sleep better then change it sooner. I do mine every 3k.

Did my first oil change at 1000 and changed to full synthetic oil will do the oil changes every 5000 after that.
Dose anyone know what oil Toyota uses when they do your 5 and 10 thousand oil change cause I want to keep using full synthetic?

I had a Honda Accord that we put synthetic in and did changes every 5000 mi. I don't think it really mattered when I traded it in-LOL!

Ok, this may be dumb--but if the filter is trapping the metal shavings, what difference does it make when you change it??? The metal is trapped, right??

 

There are a lot of benefits from using synthetic oil I know it wouldn’t matter when I traded it in.
There is always the possibility of the shavings pushing past the filter so why risk damaging you engine to save 20 or 30 bucks on an oil change
