Timing Belt or Chain?
#4
That was nearly the first question I asked when looking at the xD.... "chain or belt?"
My previous car had a belt, and I did replace it at 100,000 miles. It took $400 worth of parts, $300 worth of tools, and a $200 computer program and laptop. Oh, and about five hours of my time, considering that I had all the proper tools and a nice garage with a lift. If that sounds excessive, the dealership charges $1,600 for the timing belt job, and they don't replace everything that should be replaced (stretch bolts, water pump, etc.) It was a VW, in case anyone was wondering.

The 06 KIA Sedona I traded in for the XD had a belt. The 60K service and timing belt change was quoted as $719 (with spark plugs). Only lost $500 on the trade in, so I actually came out $219 ahead.
KIA's have a 100,000 mile warranty because they need it. It was a huge pile of crap.

It's not the chain that causes the damage. It's the lack of timing between the crankshaft (and pistons) and the camshaft (and valves). If it is an interference engine, pistons will hit valves, and there will be a LOT of damage. Doesn't matter whether what broke was a chain or a belt. Belts are more likely to break. They also need to be replaced more often than chains. A poorly done belt job can cause early failure. Belts are quieter... That's just about the only advantage.

hmmm learn something new everyday! lol i just figured the chain breaking and slapping around being metal and all would just mess stuff up, but it makes way more sense the way you put it. thanks for the lesson today!!!
