Default Window Tint Legality

I searched and couldn't find a similar thread, so...

Has anyone had any problems getting pulled over or anything from having tint too dark? I'm getting my xD tinted, and I don't really want any tickets or anything.
Is it a good idea to get the front windows a lighter tint than the back? Make it look less noticeable?

if you're from new york, any tint is too dark..

http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/NY/

70% pretty much means no tinting at all. i have gotten pulled over before and got ticketed... (no fix it tickets in oregon) and it was 242 bucks at 22%.. but the cop never showed up to court and i fixed my tint (since i paid a guy with a license to tint) so im off the hook

Right. But I was wondering if people actually get pulled over for it. I see a lot of cars around with dark tint.
And like I said, if its a good idea to have the front windows be lighter in order to avoid attention?

well in general, if the cops see u with tint in the front, u can get pulled over. some people gets pulled over and they just pay for it, they dont take their tints off. but it really depends on the cop if they wanna pull u over or not.. and if they wanna be a dick about it. some pull u over because of some other violation, and if they see u have any tint on, they'll just tack that on with your ticket

I don't recall seeing an xD with just back window tint though. Usually thats for SUVs or minivans or what have you. Will it look not good?

ive never been pulled over for too dark of tint, or even heard of it. i only hear of tint tickets being given as a secondary offense after youve gotten pulled over for something major, like speeding. if you do get pulled over for something, just roll all of your windows down so they can see you as they approach the vehicle... cops dont like it when they cant see what you are doing as they approach the car.

Go to your favorite family doctor, tell him you get headaches lately from bright light...then tell him to write a note saying that tint is necessary in your car, sign-date-phone number.

Walah.

Actually tmrepp, that doesn't work in California. Sucks I know. Before tint on my car I could feel my skin starting to burn in a few minutes of being in the sun (being fair skinned doesn't help). Now with tint on all my windows, I very rarely have that feeling of becoming crispy

LOL our shop TC got pulled over for having to dark tint in Maryland (car has 20% all around) got a fixit ticket and removed the tint. Had a sate trooper sign off on it and had it retinted a week later. LOL.

In MD you can have any tint technically because anything added to the factory tint will make it to dark under our state law.

In NY you'll be able to get away most of the time with 30% unless you were driving like a dick and the cop wants to get you for something. I've been pulled over twice for my 20% on my 240sx and was able to get away with a warning both times. I would just recommend the 30% to get away from the hassle of that though.
Front windows are bascially what the law refers too, the cops won't really care if the rears are darker as long as the fronts are visible. I would probably go with a 40 up front and 30 in the rear if anything.

You should search your states traffic codes. Virtually all the states have them posted online on their official govt web sites. The specifics will be there. Also any Tint shop worth their salt will know all the local and state regulations regarding tint darkness.

In general the laws covering window tint darkness are in response to the danger they create for police officers. As an officer approaches your vehicle they need to be able to see into the vehicle. If you have dark tint just roll all of your windows down. The officer will ask why you did that. Respond with "for your safety as you approached my car officer" or something polite along those lines and I can almost guarantee you wont get a ticket, at least one for widow tint. This won’t help you if you were doing 30 mile over the speed limit.

Also with the larger windows in our xD's we should be able to get away with SUV tint laws which at least here in Idaho allow a much darker tint on the rear passenger and back windows.
