^Yes. Look at 5th pic in my post. Get roll of electrical tape and make a deep cut around it so you will have pieces 1/4 inch wide instead of 3/4. Just dont stratch it too much when you put it on or it will shrink and peel before you even finish with painting. Just use it in places where normal painting tape wont stick.

Is sanding it that necessary? After sanding, and apply the paint theres nothing else to do right? The texture of the rims wont be all rough as it was when you sanded it right? Im planning to paint my stockies tomorrow.

heyy. I actually did these to my buddies hyundai tiburon. (experimented with his first :X) well what i did was i cleaned them up really good with an sos pad and water and solvent mix. used 400 grit sand paper. sanded his rims them masked the tires. then used automotive dark grey primer then painting it black with some good enamel semi gloss paint. forgot the name but if u have any questions pm me. ima do mine next its really easy jsut time consuming. i have detailed pics of each step. if u need info or pics on what to use pm me
end result

okay guys I need some help because I went ahead and tried this using duplicolor wheel coating and it didnt come out all that great. Whats strange is the 2nd one i did is perfect: smooth and glossy. But the other ones look like their covered in powder, the texture is very rough and it looks flat not glossy. Do I really need to resand and paint all over again or do you think I could wet sand the rough areas to smooth them out? I just dont know if wetsanding works with the wheel coating. Has anyone tried?

well to update i was able to save one of the wheels by showering it in clear coat
It could still use a redo but I will definatly do the other two botched ones first. Whats really bad about one of them is that the paint is rubbing off in some places. I just have no clue why that one did not work out at all. I will post pics later but again does anyone know if it is okay to wetsand this type of paint?

Yeah. The same thing happened to me. The sides of the spokes got really rough. Like something was on it. And when you rub it, it kinda powders off white right? I'm not sure what it was but to make sure everything went right, I resand the rim, primered and paint. Not sure if it matters or not, but when i painted the second time, i made sure the spray can was upright and painted it very quickly. Painting one rim at a time, and carrying it inside when done. Not leaving it anywhere near the next rim incase paint overspray from the second rim get on the finished rim.

I did one rim at a time too, but I didn't primer.

I first sanded it wouth a rough purple color sand paper and then a finer tan colored paper. Ill look at the grits when I go home later. I dont care if the sides arent perfectly smooth but I want the top to be.

Whats annoying is that on the rim I saved with a clear coat shower, like all the top surfaces are smooth but some of the side surfaces smooth while other are rough... that sort of inconsistency drives me crazy. maybe once it cures I'll rough up all the sides so atleast its all consistent.

sounds like you need to do a better job sanding.
not bashing you, thats just what it seems like.
if some of its smooth and some of its rough, sounds to me like some uneven sanding.

lol no its because I was pouring on clear in a last ditch effort to make it glossy and coverage just wasnt even enough

Maybe better sanding would have helped though. I try to get it perfect when I go to redo the really messed up one. Do I have to sand the paint all off or just rough it up?

if your doing it in the same color u should be fine with just roughing it up as long as you dont have any ridges, cuz youll be able to see them even after repainting.

if you are redoing one that you clearcoated, make sure you sand off all the clearcoat though.

Holy crap I'm so posed I just noticed that even on the good one the paint is rubbing off the sharp curves!so basically I need to redo em all... Should I bother trying the wheel coating paint again I'd should I try. Traditionalcar paint with primer and clear?
