Sand the wheel enough to scuff the finish so the paint will grip. I didn't use any primer, but it can't hurt anything if you do.

Heres the supplies:

cleaned the rims inside and out with soap and water only and let dry:

Taped and primed the rims only. No sanding cuz it took too long:

Finally I sprayed the inside wheel well first with one thin layer and then I did the out side last with a thin layer:

For best results I sprayed the outside lip first and then moved inside. Ill do second coat later and then gloss. Oh yeah i didnt even use the enigine degreaser so i returned that and got another can of white primer cuz i ran out. More piks of the finished results later. Payce out

Hmm... I am about to paint mine black again, I want to give it a nice glossy black. Would you want to sand or primer Steelies?

Btw, what is the best paint to use for the wheels? I don't want it to chip or anything. >_>

I didnt sand the original rim whatsoever. But that can run the risk of paint not sticking to the wheel properly under high heat conditions.

I dont drive around much on my stockies so thats why I decided to go with a non-high heat condition paint. It might chip off and it might not. We'll have to see but here are the pics of the finished wheels.

Oh yeah and everything i bought could be purchased at your local wally world. Gold paint, white primer, and clear coat enamel. I returned the duplicolor clear wheel coat cuz it sucks.

I know its not the clear coat i wanted because when i sprayed it on a test surface, it came out milky white and i could barely see the gold underneath. I thought it was going to be see through crystal clear but it was very hazy. so i returned it and got krylon triple thick crystal clear coat spray.

looks real good. I'm gonna have to do this, because sanding does take too long. But I'm gonna have to buy high heat paint, because livin in Phoenix, something is bound to melt.

What do you guys think about white spokes on a FM? I have white grilles white headlights, white grille lights, white underbody to come, and white stripe underneath the top grill down to below the bottom grill, the width of the grilles. I work at a body shop so all the paint i do is proper for a car and I can order rim paint for it. Plan on doing some white on the hood, but not the whole thing.
