Monopoly Gets South Beach Makeover
Here and Now Edition goes on sale Thursday
(CBS4 News) MIAMI The popular board game "Monopoly" has received a face lift and South Florida has a spot on the map.
South Beach has joined other popular American cities with a special place on the “Monopoly: Here and Now Edition” game board which goes on sale this week.
The Here & Now Edition game board has been completely updated based on more than 3 million votes from the American public.
There are landmarks from 22 great destination cities including South Beach and the property spaces have been re-appraised to include modern-day property values.
The game pieces have also been updated and five of them are styled after name brand products. The updated tokens include a Toyota Prius hybrid car, an order of McDonald’s French fries, a New Balance running shoe, a cup of Starbucks coffee and a Motorola Razr cell phone.
But if your favorite token was the coveted Scottish Terrier – it’s been replaced by a Labradoodle – a new breed that is a mix between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. There’s also a laptop computer.
The 11 tokens in the classic version — including the battleship, cannon, iron, shoe, thimble and top hat — will remain unchanged
“These updated tokens are extremely relevant in the 21st century and provide an additional layer of fun and authenticity for players as they enjoy our new contemporary edition," said Matt Collins, Vice President of Marketing at Hasbro Games.
In addition to the updated tokens and properties, the game's money will be in higher denominations and the Chance and Community Chest cards will include scenarios relevant to today.
The four railroads on the Monopoly board – B&O, Pennsylvania, Reading and Short Line, have also been replaced by the country’s four busiest airports: Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, Kennedy in New York, Los Angeles and O’Hare in Chicago.
The updated “Here and Now Edition” was scheduled to go on sale Thursday, however, Hasbro will continue to sell the original edition of the game, based on the classic version brought out by Parker Brothers in 1935, alongside the new edition.
Monopoly is considered the most popular board game ever, with more than 250 million copies sold.
The Here and Now edition will cost about $30 compared with $12 to $20 for the original edition.
